Our Work

What started as one homegrown magazine (with staples!) has grown into two internationally respected titles totalling 55 published issues to date and an annual circulation of 80,000 throughout western North America and abroad. Over the years, the Mountain Culture Group has also done custom content development for clients like Tourism Rockies, Red Resort and the National Post.

Our current staff of talented and experienced designers, photographers, editors, writers, production managers, and social-media experts have been collaborating together for over a decade. Beyond our core team, the Mountain Culture Group has strong working relationships with hundreds of the most accomplished photographers, writers, designers, filmmakers, and illustrators in western North America. We are an outright creative vortex.

Who We Are

Our staff represents a wellspring of talent and expertise across all industries, from graphic design and writing to film production and social media content creation. We lead with a passion and drive that infuses our work with a unique, authoritative and edgy flavour not found anywhere else. With worldly experience, technical expertise and a drive to live the mountain lives we write about—our people are basically an eclectic cast of adventurous geniuses. Here’s who we are.

Mitchell Scott brings over 25 years of experience as a creative professional, with a deep talent base across many genres of storytelling. As the founding and active editor-in-chief and co-publisher of Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine and Coast Mountain Culture Magazine, he has also held tenure as the global brand manager for Kona Bikes, communications director for the Shambhala Music Festival, and, most recently, an executive producer at Sherpas Cinema, where he produced and directed a four-part documentary series for National Geographic and Google. Over his career, he has produced, written, and directed over 100 digital-content campaigns and worked with companies like Electronic Arts, Tourism British Columbia, Powder Magazine, Bike Magazine, The Globe and Mail, Outside Magazine and many others. Scott’s combination of writing, directing, sales, marketing, and production experience is a rare grouping of skill sets in today’s media marketplace.

Peter Moynes is the founder and co-publisher of Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine and Coast Mountain Culture Magazine. As the photo editor of both publications, he has collaborated with some of North America’s most talented photographers for nearly two decades. For the past 10 years, he has also been the advertising sales director at the Mountain Culture Group, where he works constantly with brands, agencies, and small businesses, listening to and meeting the needs of every client. Moynes also sits on the Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism Board and is a member of its marketing committee.

The rest of the in-house team includes: art director Chris Rowat, who has designed many award-winning magazines and books over his career for the likes of The Getty Museum and Bruce Mau Design; Editors Mike Berard, Tara Cunningham and Vince Hempsall who have worked for almost a hundred magazines and publications between them, as well as with such national and international brands as Red Bull, Arc’teryx, Patagonia, RBC, Kona Bikes, Musé d’Elysé in Switzerland, Whistler Blackcomb, Pedego Electric Bikes, K2 Skis and Chevrolet; and copy editor Claire Philipson who specializes in proofreading and editing both fiction and non-fiction. We also work with a solid stable of photographers, cinematographers, video editors, sound technicians, graphic designers and more depending on the contract.
