Back by popular demand, documentary film “Greening the Cube: 100-Mile Housing” returns to Nelson for a single showing on Monday, February 22nd, at the historic Capitol Theatre.
Sponsored in part by Transition Nelson, the 83 minute film follows two Kootenay/Boundary green builders as they strive to build homes that are affordable, ethical, and environmentally responsible- in a word, “sustainable.” A blueprint for “100-Mile Housing” emerges, and the concept is taken throughout the region, to Vancouver and beyond. Director/producer Tyler Austin Bradley and cinematographer Andrea Vandenboer are pleased to be screening their feature length documentary for locals again, many of whom missed the initial public screenings in November.
“We had a huge show of support when we brought the film through our first time around, so much that we opted to take (the film) to Winlaw, Castlegar, and Rossland a second time,” Bradley states. “Funny thing was, we kept hearing from people that had missed it our first time through Nelson, asking when and if we would be showing it again. Partnering with Transition Nelson is making that possible.” With plans for an East-Kootenays/Rockies tour in March, and a BC-wide film tour for May, the production crew recognizes the importance of local, grassroots support for their project and others like it. “Taking the film to Kaslo, Revelstoke, and other areas in our region, people get it. The work that Transition Nelson and other volunteer organizations in our area are engaged in, this film is a good conversation starter to get different people talking to one another,” Bradley explains. “The best part of touring independently with the film has been taking part in the conversations that follow, hearing back from people in regards to not just housing issues, but all facets of the sustainability question.” Audience members are encouraged to stay for the talk-back session set to follow the screening, and to participate in the Transition Nelson facilitated discussion.
