For the third year in a row, Coast Mountain Culture is proud to be a media sponsor for the Rip Curl Pro Tofino. Our roots are in the ocean as well as on the mountain peaks, and there is no better place to show this than with the Rip Curl Pro, which is also recognized as the Canadian Surfing Championships

Tofino is not the only side of the Rip Curl Pro…Ucluelet shows a more rustic west coast side of the peninsula. Here, we take in beauty views from the hot tub of our home away from home, The Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet.

Without exaggeration, this might be the best restaurant on all of Vancouver Island. Ucluelet’s Norwoods is hands down the best place we’ve eaten in years. how does such a tiny little town have such huge tastes?!

And Ucluelet’s flavour keeps coming….Zoe’s bakery cafe helped us shake our hangovers in the morning and get us back out into the surf. Uke is truly a jewel of the west coast, and places like this mean you should get off the beaten path to Tofino and make a trip south of Long Beach.

This year (as with every year), the event was a great success with celebrated Canadian surfer Peter Devries taking the win for the sixth time. CMC editor Mike Berard was on hand to judge the first ever Rip Curl Pro Tofino photo slideshow competition, and deputy editor Darren Davidson was making sure the entire peninsula was stocked with CMC’s latest Party Issue. It was a great time (as always), and the weather was incredible (as it sometimes is). See you next year?

People need their reading material. CMC editor Mike Berard delivers the goods to a happy row of sponsor tents. How about that weather?

More Black Rock Resort…if there wasn’t surfing to chase you wouldn’t even have to leave this luxury location. Pampered on the rustic west coast!

The crowd that turned out to watch the photo slideshow competition was rewarded with 5 great shows by mostly local photographers. Also, there were cocktails.

Press Release, June 3rd

June 3, 2014, Vancouver, B.C.—Canada’s best surfers competed for national titles and more than $25,000 in cash and prizes this past weekend in Tofino, B.C., filling 150 competitor spots. The competition was fierce with action-packed surf on 4-5 ft. waves below sunny skies with light winds.

“From the first round, each heat was as challenging as a final,” said Dom Domic, President of the Canadian Surfing Association and Competition Director of the Rip Curl Pro Tofino. Domic continued, “There are no easy heats for professional surfing in Canada, and this year the competition has raised the bar.”

Six-time champion, Peter Devries came out of the competition with another victory. Devries surfed through four extremely competitive heats, narrowly edging out Sepp Bruhwiler for the second year in a row, to finish with the well-deserved win.

Tofino, dubbed Canada’s ‘Surf City,’ had it’s best turnout for the event in eight years, showcasing competitors ranging in ages from 6 to 56. With more than 1000 spectators travelling near and far to experience the excitement, this year’s Rip Curl Pro Tofino highlighted the progression of the  Canadian surf scene and it’s evolution over time.

“We could not have asked for better conditions for this event,” said Myrosha Daley, Rip Curl Marketing Manager and Event Organizer. Daley added, “Every year this event is growing, Rip Curl Canada is excited about the event’s success this year and cannot wait to show what next year has in store.”

The Rip Curl Pro Tofino is presented by Monster Energy in association with Coors Banquet, Spy Optic, Sanuk, Jose Cuervo, and sponsored by The Zone 91.3, Flor de Cana, Coast mountain Culture magazine, Afatanas Surfboards, Tourism Tofino and Iceberg.
